What does a Clinical Nutritionist actually do?

I support my clients’ health goals with food, lifestyle and mindset support. I spend time with my clients getting to know them – their health history, health goals, what’s been getting in their way? I dive deeper – what does a typical day look like for them – work, family commitments, sleep, stress levels, what do they eat and when, what do they drink? Then I work with them as they implement changes that will have long-lasting impacts on their health – diet, lifestyle, mindset.

I came to this profession later in life, after many years in the corporate space, working in Human Resources and Project Management. I always had an interest in food and health. When I decided it was time for a career change, I found myself enrolled in a Bachelor of Health Science (Nutritional and Dietetic Medicine) – much to the surprise of both my husband and me!

During my degree I soaked up all the knowledge of my lecturers, absorbed everything I could in the student clinic seeing clients and developing treatment plans. After 5.5 years of study (interrupted by a brush with breast cancer requiring 6 months of chemotherapy followed by surgery; happily I’m now five years cancer-free), I started Katrina’s Family Nutrition, to guide people to better health, particularly mums and teenagers. I soon realised how important mindset is to making lasting health changes. This led me to undertake further studies in neurolinguistic programming (NLP). Having studied psychology at university after highschool, NLP felt like a natural step to improve communication with my clients, along with understanding what makes them tick.

What would it look like if you came to see me?

As mentioned, I would spend time getting to know you. I ask lots of questions, to understand your unique health patterns, find connections within and between your body’s systems – your gut health, your immune system, your hormones, your metabolism, your nervous system and more, along with a thorough understanding of your lifestyle.

If weight loss is your goal, we dive into Metabolic Balance, a program which matches your unique blood chemistry to the right foods, in the right proportions, for you.

If you are struggling with hormonal fluctuations, we look at which foods will help bring you balance.

If you are struggling with digestive complaints such as irritable bowel, chronic constipation or diarrhoea, unexplained bloating, we’ll focus on restoring your gut health (side note – after years of intolerances, I am now able to eat many of the foods I had been avoiding, after focusing on my own gut health while studying).

If you are struggling with mindset, feeling overwhelmed, lacking confidence or your emotions get the better of you, my NLP-based programs will support you to change your patterns of thoughts and behaviours, so that you can improve your confidence, release negative emotions and limiting beliefs, putting you in control of your future, working towards your goals.

All changes, diet, lifestyle, mindset, are implemented with me by your side. I will guide, support and encourage you (and provide the proverbial motivational kick along if needed!). Ultimately, the power to manage your health and your life is in your hands. I’m here to point you in the right direction and help you stay on track.

Imagine being healthier, stronger, more confident in your skin. Imagine knowing what foods are right for you. Imagine giving your future self and your future health the attention and support you deserve.
