When it comes to food, there’s no shortage of confusion. Should you cut carbs? Go low-fat? Focus on protein? The truth is, your body thrives on balance—not extremes.

In my clinic and programs like Metabolism Makeover and Metabolic Balance ®, I work with women who want more energy, fewer cravings, better moods, and sustainable weight loss. And it starts with understanding the three key macronutrients: protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats.

Let’s break them down.

Protein: Your Metabolic MVP

Think of protein as your body’s building block—it supports muscle tone, immune health, and keeps you feeling full for longer.

If you often feel hungry soon after a meal or find yourself snacking all afternoon, you might not be eating enough protein.

Quick tips:

  • Aim for a source of protein at every meal—eggs, fish, chicken, legumes, tofu, Greek yoghurt.
  • Spread it out across your meals —don’t just load up at dinner.
  • Protein is especially important for women over 40 to support metabolism, lean muscle mass, and energy.

Carbohydrates: Not the Enemy

Carbs have copped a bad reputation, but the truth is: they’re essential for energy and mood. The trick is choosing the right kind of carbs.

Processed and refined carbs (think white bread, pastries, chips) spike your blood sugar and lead to crashes, cravings, and fat storage. But whole-food carbs? They support digestion, hormone health, and brain function.

Better choices include:

  • Vegetables (a mix of root veggies and green, leafy veggies)
  • Fruits (like berries, apples, and bananas)
  • Whole grains (like oats, brown rice, and quinoa)
  • Legumes and lentils

When you pair quality carbs with protein and healthy fats, you avoid the blood sugar rollercoaster.

Healthy Fats: The Missing Link

Fats aren’t something to fear—they’re essential for hormone production, brain health, skin glow, and satiety.

So, if your meals feel unsatisfying or you find yourself grazing soon after eating, it might be time to add fat, not remove it.

Include sources like:

  • Avocado
  • Extra virgin olive oil, flax seed oil, ghee, native coconut oil
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Oily fish like salmon
  • Nut butters (without added sugar)
  • Nuts and seeds

Healthy fats help slow the absorption of sugar into your bloodstream, keeping your energy stable and your metabolism humming.

What Does Balance Look Like?

A balanced meal might be:

  • Grilled salmon with roasted veggies, drizzled with extra virgin olive oil
  • Stir-fried chicken and greens with quinoa or brown rice
  • A frittata with sweet potato and avocado slices on the side

It’s not about perfection—it’s about understanding what fuels you best and making choices that leave you feeling calm, satisfied, and in control.
