I spent around three hours cleaning out my kitchen on the weekend.
You know how kitchen cupboards get.
Glass and plastic storage containers get mixed up.
Lids go missing.
Random items disappear into dark corners.
Mysterious stains appear where the balsamic vinegar or honey jar was sitting.
Clutter. Disorder.
It’s manageable for a while. You scrabble around looking for that perfect size container to put the leftovers, then slide over to the next drawer looking for the lid that actually fits.
Mutter to yourself about getting things sorted out.
And the chaos builds.
Then you buy a new kitchen appliance and realise you need to create space for it somewhere.
I had some time on my hands, as I was doing a Metabolic Balance ® (MB) cleanse – two days of eating mostly vegetables, giving my digestive system a break, preparing it for getting back on to my MB plan (necessary after Christmas, New Years, holidays. We were lucky enough to spend a few weeks in Europe, and while the food was delicious, French pastries really aren’t that good for the waistline. So, time to get re-focused).
I digress. The kitchen (along with my health) needed attention.
I started with one cupboard – piled the contents on the bench. Wondered where some of the less-used baking dishes could live.
Realised I needed to clean out two other cupboards to create space. Along with the two big drawers full of food storage containers (glass, plastic, ceramic, Tupperware – the things you collect over 20 years of living), some of which had migrated to the first cupboard.
More things appeared on the bench (thankfully we have a big island bench).
My daughter arrived in the kitchen and wondered how she could cook herself some eggs – I’d covered the stovetop with stuff.
With cupboards and drawers emptied, I paused, wondering how on earth I would get it all put away again. Honestly, I was a little bored already. My husband was watching from the living room with a bemused expression (he was also doing the MB cleanse – choosing to distract himself by watching tv. Much less productive in my opinion).
Bit by bit, I started putting things back away. Moving things around. Trying different locations. Discarding things that had been hiding for over a year, clearly no longer needed. Matching lids to containers. Putting like-minded containers together.
Slowly, order was restored.
As various family-members appeared in the kitchen, I proudly opened cupboards and drawers to show off my superb organisational skills.
They were a little less enthusiastic than I was.
The next day, having completed both the kitchen clean out and the 2-day MB cleanse, I started my day with a bowl brimming with blueberries and goat’s yoghurt. I felt…. Energised. Focused. Ready. Enthusiastic.
Over the next few weeks, I’m resetting my health with my MB plan, eating foods that I know are nutritionally perfect for my body, in just right proportions.
Back in 2023, I lost 7 kilos following my Metabolic Balance ® plan (and have helped over 60 clients reach their goal weight following their plans since then).
A couple of my lost kilos have crept back on. Towards the end of a very busy year last year, followed by a holiday, it’s fair to say my eating habits had become a bit more chaotic. Just like the kitchen cupboards.
Now, order is re-established. Everything feels easier and smoother. The extra kilos will fall by the wayside and the kitchen will stay ordered (well, that last part is more challenging when there are four other household members getting involved… but I can hope!).
